Planning a Kid-Friendly Marquee Event Without Losing the Grown-Up Fun

Planning an event where children are invited doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice adult fun. The trick is to strike a balance, giving kids the freedom to enjoy themselves while ensuring the grown-ups can relax and enjoy the day too. A marquee gives you the space and versatility to create an event that caters to both, without it feeling like a kid’s birthday party.

Start by creating zones. A kids-only corner can be a lifesaver. Set up a small side tent or annex filled with bean bags, soft flooring, activity tables, and games. Colouring sheets, puzzles, building blocks and even a film area can keep kids entertained for hours while giving parents peace of mind.

Consider hiring professional children’s entertainers like face painters, balloon artists, or magicians. If your budget allows, a supervised play area gives adults the freedom to enjoy the event without constantly keeping one eye on their little ones.

Food is another big one. Children often don’t want what the adults are eating, so create a separate menu with familiar favourites like mini pizzas, sandwiches, fruit skewers, or chicken bites. Serve them in fun boxes or picnic-style baskets to make it extra appealing.

Think about timing too. Avoid long speeches or complicated activities that will bore younger guests. If you’re planning games or toasts, keep them short and punchy. For evening events, it’s worth having an earlier programme or designated rest area where children can wind down.

The marquee layout matters as well. Position families near exits or closer to the kids’ corner. This allows them to supervise easily without feeling isolated from the rest of the event. Keep walkways clear for pushchairs and think about safety, which means no trailing wires or sharp furniture corners.

Don’t forget the grown-ups! While the kids are occupied, create thoughtful touches for adults too. A cocktail bar, live music, stylish lounge seating, or even a tasting station can elevate the event and make it feel truly special.

Lighting is a great way to set the tone as the event transitions from day to night. String lights, lanterns, and soft uplighting create an atmosphere that works for everyone and keeps the marquee feeling cosy and inviting.

Planning for children doesn’t mean compromising your vision. With a little creativity and consideration, your marquee event can feel elegant, fun, and welcoming for guests of all ages.
